Explanation of Paradise Lost by John Milton (121-155)
Lines: 121-127
We will carry our undying hostilities with our force or by our
treachery. We will not reconcile with our great enemy, who is now exalted
himself and enjoying his victory and is holding the reign solely and tyranny of
Heaven. Torturing and tormenting in pain he spoke and boasted loudly, though he
was in great despair. His companions and other fallen angels thus reply to him
(Satan).
Lines: 128-135
Beelzebub who is next to Satan in power and rank replying to Satan. O
Prince, O leader of the higher ranked angels, who drew them in battle and led
them and who by his valour have shaken the throne of Heaven’s perpetual King
and who has tested his supremacy that whether His supremacy is due to His strength, or by
chance or by fate He is holding it. I know well the dreadful results of our
fight against Him (God).
Lines: 136-155
I realized well that we have not only been defeated and not only been
deprived of heavenly bliss but we will toss on the fiery lake perpetually.
Great numbers of our other angels have sustained injuries. No doubt that out
mind remained unconquered and we have rapidly recovered our strength but our
physical properties have become dim/low. We have changed from eternal happiness
to eternal misery. How do we know that our conqueror (God) whom I must believe
that He is Almighty has not made us immortal which means that we will suffer in
Hell forever? None other than God could have overthrown our power. As we have
made immortal we will suffer forever, he will fully satisfy is revenge or we
may be employed like prisoners of war to perform His orders. Here in heart of
Hell we will work in fire whatever business it could be? We good will we take
out of our strength when we suffer eternal torture in Hell.
