Critical Analysis of the Paradise Lost (203-301)
Critical Analysis of the Paradise Lost (203-301)
Lines: 203-208
The above said Laviathan some time considered as a vessel on the sea
because of its size. Milton is telling that the size of Satan was become huge,
giant size like Laviathan- a sea monster. And the captain of the some small
boat which is lost in the night considered it an island. As it happens that the
boat is fasten with its body with anchor in its fish like body.
Lines: 209-220
Like the Leviathan the sea monster Satan was huge in size and length, he
was lying on fiery lake and was chained.
He had not risen and lift his head up. God left him free to fulfill his
wicked designs. So that with committing sins time and again, he could bring
upon him his own damnation while seeking evil for other inviting the terrible
anger of God. As his dark design for the man will be converted in love and
kindness for the man from God.
Lines: 221-229
Suddenly he rose out of lake. The fiery ripples spread out to each side
throughout the lake in sloping curves by the movement of his body. The ripples created the horrid ditch. Then he
stretched his wings and started to fly high above in the dark/gloomy air. He
felt unusual weight then take on the dry land. Lake was burning with liquid
fire and the dry land was burning with solid fire.
Lines: 230-241
The dry land on which Satan sat was looking like an active volcano
(Pelorus) of the shattered side of thundering Aetna which was torn apart by the
violent subterranean gust and the base/bottom of that was combustible matter of
fire and smoke. He rested his foot on burning land. His next Beelzebub followed
him. Both felt victorious and glorified to have escaped the burning hell on
their own.
Lines: 242-263
Is this the region, this soil and climate we have changed for heaven,
the lost archangel said to Beelzebub. This mournful dark place against the
celestial light. Be it so, the God who is now sovereign will decide what is
right. Better to live farthest from the God. No doubt God is equal to us in
reasoning faculties, His equals made Him Superior over us by force. Farewell
Heaven where joy lives forever. Welcome horrors, welcome infernal world. O
Deepest hell, receive your new possessor, who has brought a mind which cannot
be changed by place or time. Mind depends on itself rather than the outer
circumstances. The mind can turn a hell into heaven and heaven into hell. What
is the matter, if I am still the same? I can be everything but not less than He
(God). He (God) has got superiority because of His thunder. At this place at
least we are free away from Him. God has not created anything in Hell to His
envy. Living farthest from God we can reign secure and in my thinking, to rule
is worthwhile even in hell
Lines: 264-282
Why we let our faithful friends who were our associates and co-partners
of our loss/defeat lying unconsciously on the fiery lake and why not call them
to join with us this gloomy place (Hell) and we should assembled ourselves and
arms ourselves and should make a policy that what we can regained from Heaven
or think about what we can further loss in Hell.
Lines: 283-301
It was very hard for Beelzebub to stop when his superior leader was
moving toward shore. His heavy shield, massive, large and round which was
manufactured in Heaven was lagging him behind. The heavy shield he was carrying
on his shoulders like the moon. The size of the shield was very large as it is
being magnified through the telescope made by Galileo (He belonged to Tuscan,
Milton once saw his telescope therefore he is making the reference to
telescope) from the Fiesole, hill near Florence and from the Valdarno a hill on
which Florence was built. The telescope was built by Galileo to discover new
lands, rivers and mountains in its directed position. Now the Milton is talking
about his spear which was also very huge, the size of a pine tree, cut down
from the Hills of Norway to make mast of some flag-ship. The mast referring
here would be a little stick when compared to the Satan’s spear. Satan was
walking on burning soil with the help of this spear. These steps were not like
the steps on the bluish floor of Heaven. The extremely hot soil of hell was smiting
him and he was enduring the great heat when he was standing on the burning soil
of hell and called the army of angels who were lying unconscious.
